UFC Fighter Assaulted by Colleague Just Days Before Live Event

Fight Fans may have noticed Ailin Perez entering the arena with a black eye before her hard-earned victory at UFC Vegas 82 on November 17.

The black eye stemmed from a brawl at the UFC Performance Institute on November 14, which embroiled Perez, her coach, and fellow UFC fighter Joselyne Edwards.

Perez’ eye after the fight.

In her post-fight interview, Perez disclosed that a brawl erupted when she criticized another UFC fighter’s performance online:

“What I did was I stated my opinion online about the [other fighter’s] fight,” Perez didn’t name who she antagonized. “I didn’t disrespect anyone, I didn’t talk bad about anyone. But this irrelevant lady came up to me after I opinionated about one of her fights …And she came to assault me, and she did assault me with the intention to make me pull out of my fight.

“…I won regardless of the assault that took place… I want to thank my coach… because if it wasn’t for him, I would have had much worse injuries because he was able to take her off me…”

‘Her coach attacked me. I practically had to fight two of them,’ Joselyne Edwards Reveals

The fighter involved in the brawl was revealed to be Joselyne Edwards, who offered her own version of events in a statement to MMA Mania:

“While we were fighting, her coach attacked me from behind. He was strangling me so that Ailin would hit me. I practically had to fight two of them,” Edwards revealed. ” He did not protect anyone, he started the fight, he was the one who heated things so that the fight would take place, and then he attacked me and was strangling me.

“Later, when they had already separated me from Ailin, he was still strangling me and did not want to let me go. He never separated the fight; he attacked me while she attacked me.” (h/t MMA Mania)

As it stands, there hasn’t been an update on whether either fighter or Perez’s coach will face any consequences for the brawl.
