Legendary boxing trainer Teddy Atlas believes that UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley has a fair shot in professional boxing, comparing him to one of the greatest boxers of all time.
O’Malley’s move to boxing has been circulating online for a while, with ‘Suga’ recently remarking that he’d like to take on Floyd Mayweather Jr., promising to “put him out.”
Atlas Gives O’Malley One of His ‘Greatest Compliments’
Boxing and MMA are entirely different sports; few MMA fighters have successfully transitioned. Despite this, Atlas believes O’Malley has all the skills necessary to make the jump.
“He can cross over, because he has the instinct, the talent, the abilities, of a boxer – a pure boxer,” Atlas remarked on his YouTube channel. “He’s got the legs, he’s got the eyes, he sees things real good. He’s got long arms, he’s got quick hands. … He’s a great, great, great, natural counterpuncher.
“… It is the greatest compliment I can give to Sean O’Malley,” Atlas continued. “… ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley I would compare you to ‘Sweet Pea’ Pernell Whittaker.”
‘Sweet Pea’ Pernell Whittaker was a four-weight champion and undisputed lightweight champion who competed from 1984 to 2001. He was known for his sting-and-move style and ended his career with a professional record of 40-4-1, three of those losses coming in his twilight years. It’s safe to say that Atlas sees excellent potential in O’Malley’s boxing.
