It’s hard to deny that Jon Jones is one of, if not the greatest, MMA fighter the sport has ever seen.

Jones remains undefeated in 15 UFC title fights and would be the front-runner for title defenses if he never encountered any controversy. He’d also possess the longest UFC winning streak, or undefeated streak, if not for his no-contest against Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 or his controversial DQ to Matt Hamill in 2009.
Despite all this, Jones has recently come under fire for his unwillingness to fight the interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall. ‘Bones’, with the backing of UFC CEO Dana White, plans to fight his original opponent, Stipe Miocic and will likely retire whatever the result.
Because of this, fans are questioning his fighting legacy and bringing up his past transgressions. Most infamously, Jones tested positive for ‘picograms’ of turinabol after knocking out Cormier at UFC 214.
Jon Jones: I’ve Proven My Innocence, Picograms Are Legal in Our Sport
In a recent slew of responses on X, Jones addressed his dicey past with PED suspensions, remarking that he has proven his innocence and that ‘picograms are legal in our sport’:
“Worked my ass to prove my innocence,” Jones replied to a user bringing up his PED history. “Now picograms are legal in our sport. Honestly, none of that will matter a few years from now when I’m covering my kids tuition. You guys still laughing about what happened at the office, I’m outside on a golf cart.”
Jones’ statement might be confusing since a picogram is a unit of measurement equal to one trillionth of a gram. He is probably referring to UFC Senior VP of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky’s statement that UFC athletes will not be sanctioned if they test for 100 picograms or less of an illegal substance, “Too many uncertainties.”

When it all comes to a close, Jones’ record will be immortalized in the annals of UFC history. Hindsight and revisionism will come into play when judging his legacy: Will it actually be marred by controversy? Or will those events just be an asterisk next to his many accomplishments? Only time will tell.
